SNAP Update!

Starting April 1, new rules will limit what can be purchased with SNAP benefits in Texas. SNAP recipients will no longer be able to use benefits to buy candy or sweetened beverages, including most sodas and drinks with added sugar or artificial sweeteners. SNAP benefits can still be used to purchase essential and nutritious items such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat, bread, and beverages made with more than 50% fruit or vegetable juice. Shoppers are encouraged to check nutrition labels, especially for sugar content, to determine whether items are eligible. Retailers are also updating systems and training staff to ensure compliance with the new rules. While the goal is to improve nutrition, some concerns have been raised about how these restrictions may affect access to affordable food for families with limited options.
